WHY BULGARIAN WINE
Evidences of wine making in these lands date back to thousands of years before Christ. Thrace, nowadays Bulgaria is where wine was made for the first time. Today moder wineries are spread all over the country. THE TERROIR
Located in the Balkans, near the Mediterranean Sea between Italy and Turkey, and on the Black Sea at the same time, Bulgaria meets all the criteria common for the renowned terroirs. Bulgaria lies on the same latitude as the most famous wine regions of the Old World in France, Italy and Spain.
BULGARIAN GRAPES
While much of the wine produced in Bulgaria is made from commonly known international varietals there are some very interesting indigenous ones. Some of them are grapes that have existed for thousands of years - like the Bulgaria's proud Mavrud, and others have been created more recently in a lab.
WINE TRADITIONS
Wine has been cherished in these lands ever since the time of the Thracians, who first inhabited the area. They used it not only as a drink on the table, but also for many of their religious rituals. After the establishment of the Bulgarian state in the 7th century, these traditions in winemaking were inherited, preserved and continued.
MODERN BULGARIAN WINEMAKING
The vineyards are now scattered across the whole country but mainly in valleys and coastal plain areas. Newly planted ones form a significant share of the total. The best conditions for cultivation are in the valleys of the rivers Maritsa and Danube. Here the grapes benefit the most from both the fertile soils and the excellent climate conditions. Here modern production technologies meet classical techniques to give birth to incredible wines.
BULGARIAN WINE REGIONS
Contemporary Bulgaria is gradually finding its identity as a modern wine-producing nation, discovering new terroirs, grape varieties and styles. A steady process of establishing a particular ‘Bulgarian’ wine style is continually going on, while at the same time opting for well-known, reliable and marketable grape varieties. Vineyards are everywhere. The territory of the country is divided into five main wine producing regions, each one with its own specific characteristics.
